Andhra Dal-Tomato Pappu
Andhra style dal-Tomato Pappu is one of the best dals I had a few months back. Its recipe is simple like any dal but tastes heavenly. The flavour, sourness that comes due to a good amount of tomatoes and tamarind outstand most of the dal version. This is the third time I have made it. Once, with just toor dal and once with chana dal. This tomato pappu recipe is made using an equal quantity of both lentils with the addition of spinach to increase its nutritional value.
Go for it. I am sure you will make it again and again.
Prep time: 10 mins
Cook time: 20 mins
Serves: 3
Ingredients for Dal
1/2 cup Pigeon lentil/Tuvar dal
1/2 cup Bengal gram lentil/Chana dal
1 cup chopped Spinach
1 and 1/2 cup tomatoes
1/2 cup onion
1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
2 green spicy chilis
1 tbsp red chili powder
1/2 tbsp turmeric powder
1/4 cup tamarind pulp
1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds
3 cup water
Salt to taste

Preparation method
Soak Toor dal and Chana dal in water for at least 15-20 minutes.

Next, put the pressure cooker on a low flame and to it, add soaked lentils, tomatoes, onions, spinach, ginger-garlic paste, green chili.

Mix the ingredient and let the mixture heats up uniformly.

Over it, add turmeric powder, red chili powder, methi/fenugreek seeds and tamarind pulp. Give a stir, add 3 cups of water to it, sprinkle salt to taste and bring the mixture to boil.
Close the pressure cooker and cook it till 3 whistles.

Once the dal is cooked and the pressure cooker has cooled down, whisk the dal using a hand whisker to get the mushy, thick consistency.

Ingredients for tempering
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp cumin seeds
1/4 spoon asafetida
8-9 curry leaves
4-5 clove sliced garlic
2 Dried chili
2 tbsp clarified butter/ghee

Take 2 tbsp of clarified butter/ghee in a tadka pan. To it add sliced garlic and sauté it for around 45 seconds.

Then add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafetida, urad dal, neem leaves and dry red chili to it.
Let them splutter at a low flame and transfer to the dal.

Add coriander leaves to it, adjust salt if required and mix it well.

A mouthwatering Andhra style dal-Tomato Pappu is ready to enjoy with paratha or rice.
