Thakkali Sadam/Tomato Rice
Tomato Rice, also known as Thakkali Sadam in Tamil is though originally from South India, has become part of every culture. And each region had its own version of recipes. I too ventured through the google in search of an authentic recipe but I ended up in getting confused. Thus decided to prepare in my style using dry roasted freshly grounded spices, Tomatoes, Onions and Ginger-Garlic and it really turned out to be delicious and flavorsome. Do try once.

Roasted Spices Powder Ingredients
1 tsp Fenugreek seeds
1 tsp Split black gram lentils
1 and 1/2 tsp Bengal gram lentils
1 tsp Coriander seeds
5-6 Dry red chili
7-8 Curry leaves.

Preparation Method
Place a pan at a low medium flame and transfer all above spices into it.
Stir it continuously and cook it till all spices heat up uniformly and starts emitting aroma. Be careful not to burn. It should be lightly brown.

Let it cool and transfer into the mixing bowl and grind to get a fine powder.


Thakalli Sadam/Tomato Rice Recipe
Tomato Rice Ingredients
1and 1/2 cup Raw Rice
1 tbsp Bengal Gram (Chana dal)
1 tbsp Split Black Gram(Urad daal)
1 cup Tomato
2/3 cup Onion
1 tbsp Ginger Garlic paste
1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
1/4 tsp Asafetida
7-8 Curry leaves
1 tsp Turmeric powder
1 and 1/2 tsp Chili powder
2 tbsp Clarified butter/Ghee
Above made dry roast powder(entire)
Preparation Method
Take rice in a bowl, wash it twice with fresh water and soaked it for at least 15-30 minutes before cooking it. It should be parboiled and not overcooked otherwise it would become sticky.

Along with rice, wash split black and bengal gram lentils in a separate bowls and soak it for at least 15 minutes.

By the time, rice is cooking, chop tomatoes, onions and keep it aside.

Heat ghee in a pan, add mustard seeds, pinch of asafetida, curry leaves and let it splutter.
Then add Black split gram, Bengal gram lentils and sauté them.
Immediately add garlic ginger paste and chopped onions to it, stir them and cook till onion turns transparent.

Further add tomatoes, cook it for 2 minutes and add red chili powder, turmeric powder and dry roast spice powder to it.

Mix it well, sprinkle salt to taste and let it cook till oil separates on the sides and mixture turns a little dry.

Finally add boiled rice to the above mixture and toss it appropriately so that rice is blend well with masalas.
Sprinkle a little bit of dry toast powder and enjoy hot and spicy Tomato rice with Curd or Raita.
